Home Based Head Start Program

What is Home Based Head Start?

A Head Start Family Educator visits each family in their home one day each week for one and one-half hours. The Family Educator assists parents in the teaching of their own children. The Family Educator also helps the family find health care and social services when necessary.

The social experience young children need is provided by a bi-monthly visit to a Head Start Center. Transportation to the center is provided at some locations. A group of children and one parent per child meet to participate in PACT (Parents and Children Together). This is a two-hour session which includes parent seminars, trainings, activities, and recreation for all participants.

Field trips take place periodically and free book distributions occur three times each year during PACT. Free books are also distributed to children who attend Fun Fair.

What does the Home Based Family Educator do?
  • Visits your home at the same time each week and stays for one and one-half hours.

  • Brings ideas for activities for you and your child.

  • Shows you how to use things in your home to teach your child.

  • Plans and demonstrates activities for you.

  • Assists you in finding what community resources are available for such things as nutrition, mental health, family planning, and special education services.

  • Participates in bi-monthly PACT sessions.

  • Keeps records on your child's progress and shares them with you.

  • Brings a light, nutritious snack each week.

  • Explains what and how your child learns through all kinds of fun experiences.

What does the Home Based parent get to do?
  • Be an active participant during the home visit.

  • Be involved in teaching their child during the home visit and throughout the week.

  • Ride the bus with their child to PACT sessions.

  • Be involved in planning activities for the child and family.

  • Have opportunities to attend parent activities during PACT as well as regular Parent Link meetings and workshops.

Why are parents so important to the Home Based Program?
  • Parents have taught their children many things from the day their children were born. A Home Based program enhances and uses this closeness as an effective way of teaching.

  • When parents are directly involved in teaching their children, the children do better for a longer period of time after they enter school.

  • As parents develop confidence and learn new ways to teach, they are better able to teach their own children.

  • Parents know their children better than anyone else. They give valuable suggestions to the Family Educator on what their child should learn and how they learn best.
