From the Directors Desk...

Greetings to everyone and Happy New Year!

There is some BIG news happening at Tri-County Head Start. Thanks to ARRA (American Recovery and Reinvestment Act) funding, we have received an Early Head Start grant! This grant will serve 66 children 0-3 in Berrien County and 6 pregnant moms for a total of 72 slots. Early Head Start at TCHS is partnering with Berrien RESA to provide Early Head Start services at the Even Start building in Benton Harbor, along with two Home Visitors through the Parents as Teacher program.

The Coloma YWCA will provide Early Head Start services to 8 infants and toddlers at that location.

The Capstone Family Support Center in Benton Harbor will provide Early Head Start programming 6 pregnant moms before and after the birth of their baby.

Tri-County Head Start will be hiring a Home Visitor to provide Early Head Start services to foster families with children 0-3.

This is truly a wonderful opportunity for our families in Berrien County!

A couple of other notes that need your attention:

  1. Our annual Self-Assessment will take place from February 8 –February 12. This gives our program a chance to evaluate the services we are offering your children in order to meet the Head Start Performance Standards and how we are doing meeting our 2009-2010 goals. We have community members, parents and staff helping in this process.

  2. Re-enrollment for children who will be eligible for Head Start during the 2010-2011 program year will be starting in April. Please be looking for a Family Advocate to contact you about getting the paperwork completed.

  3. Please read further in the newsletter for information regarding the Earned Income Tax Credit.

As always, I continue to encourage your participation with your child in the Head Start program. You truly make a difference in the life of your child! It is important to see all those little faces in the classroom everyday.

Sincerely,
Mona Borowicz

All Kids Need:
Opportunities for Exploration & Discovery

Hodding Carter quotes a wise old woman who once said, “There are only two lasting bequests we can hope to give our children. One of these is roots, the other, wings.”

Parenting and teaching is about a balance between showing on the one hand, and letting a child learn on his/her own.

Give your child the thirst to learn and explore…and the skills of inquiry, investigation, observation, analysis and evaluation.

Don’t be afraid to give your kids wings.
Learn to let go.
